(Not So) Far Away Trains Passing By

I feel it coming.

Nothing more than sheer intuition,

mixed with the faint sensation of something approaching in the distance.

The train could be miles from here - an hour passes, or so it feels.

I hear it coming closer, only for it to fade away.

It comes back, then it’s gone.

Back, then gone.

After much false hope, I try to fall asleep.

Then, everything goes quiet, the house begins to shake, and I hear the barreling forward of the freight train.

A gentle giant in the night.

The weight of the steel chugging along the tracks rocks me to sleep,

and after the moment, I am at peace.
